A recognisable look is a business asset
When someone can spot your work in a feed without seeing your name, you've built a signature. That consistency is why clients pick you specifically — and it starts with a deliberate colour palette, not a random preset.
Define your mood in words first
Before touching a slider, describe the feeling you want in three or four words: *warm, timeless, earthy* — or *bright, airy, pastel* — or *moody, filmic, muted*. Everything you do in editing serves those words. A style is a set of consistent decisions, not an accident.
The levers that make a palette
- White balance direction. Do you lean warm (golden, cosy) or cool (clean, editorial)? Pick a side and stay there.
- How you treat skin tones. Slightly warm and peachy? Neutral and true? Your skin rendering is the most recognisable part of your look.
- Your shadows. Lifted, matte, faded shadows read "film"; deep, contrasty shadows read "bold and modern." This one choice defines half your style.
- A signature colour shift. Many recognisable photographers push greens toward teal, or oranges toward terracotta. One or two consistent hue shifts become your fingerprint.
Build a reference board
Collect 15–20 of your own favourite images and study what they share. Your style is usually already hiding in the frames you're proudest of — name it, then reproduce it on purpose.
